ENGROSSER'S

SCRIPT

WITH KALO CHU

What you'll learn:

Known for it's drastic shades and drawn structure, Engrosser's Script is a show-stopping traditional Copperplate hand. IAMPETH Certified Kalo Chu guides us in developing skillful pen control and a keen understanding of the letterforms.

  • Exercises to strengthen the foundational strokes used to build the letterforms
  • An in depth study of the full lower and upper case alphabets
  • Technical structure and spacing of letters, words, and lines of text.

Engrosser's Script

Engrosser's script involves deliberate strokes and frequent pen lifts. It is written with a flexible pointed nib with slow, precise motions. Each letter is made of a combination of principle strokes, requiring the calligrapher to lift the nib from the paper in between each element. This course will be taught using the exemplar from The Zanerian Manual.

Did you know?

"Copperplate" is a term that is widely applied to multiple types of shaded scripts: English Roundhand, Engraver's and Engrosser’s scripts.

English Roundhand was originally written with a quill and was executed as handwriting (vs individual lifted strokes). The penmen's handwriting was then carved into copper printing plates by master engravers. Hence the terms Engraver’s script and Copperplate.

Engrosser's script (given the name due to it's popularity on engrossed certificates and diplomas) was developed in the U.S. as an attempt to simulate the look of these metal engravings. The Zanerian Manual uses the terms Engraver's and Engrosser's interchangeably.
