The ruling pen is a very versatile and expressive tool, capable of lettering styles from explosive to subtle, traditional to contemporary. Rachel shares with us the myriad of possibilities of the ruling pen’s ‘line’ with that fascinating bitten edge.

The variety of ruling pens:
Ruling pens come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. For this class, you may want to start with the classic fine tipped ruling pen shown second from far right. These were traditionally used by architects and are easily available on Amazon. After seeing Rachel's various ruling pens, you may be inspired to make your own "Cola" pen (Rachel will show us how!) or purchase another more modern shape.

About Rachel:
Rachel is a freelance calligrapher specializing in expressive styles mainly working on logos, packaging, promotional material, and stationery. Rachel has taught a wide variety of calligraphic and design disciplines in art schools, conferences, and workshops both in the UK and internationally. The driving force in her work is line: the shape, the texture, and in particular, the tension between one line and another. She strives every day to make that elusive perfect mark and letterform.
